The WSOP UPDATES 2005
[Dave note: I didn't go to Vegas planning on entering the WSOP...
Tim, Jane, Lina and I went planning on seeing a few shows (Barry Manilow, La
Reve, Fab 4 and Amazing Jonathan) and eating at some fine dinners. We
booked quite a while ago on JetsGo and had planned on returning on the
Saturday. JetsGo of course went bankrupt and we could only get tickets on
Air Canada for the girls to return on the Saturday. Since the WSOP
tournament was on the Sunday...what else could we do? The rest is
history... ]

Each just laid down $1,500 for Sundays WSOP event. May be a good
omen my
random seat assignment is table 1 seat 1.
[Dave Note: World Series of Poker is about 20 tournaments...each
with
various Buy-ins and formats i.e.: Hold em Limit vs No Limit vs
Omaha No
limit etc.... The main event that everyone talks about is a
$10,000 buy
in No Limit Holdem tournament with over 6,600 entrants this year
and
prize money over $60M]

Sorry for the spam (well not really). Just letting you know that
Caputo
and I just entered Sunday's WSOP $1,500 limit event.
Having just read the rules about sponsorship I see we are allowed
to
wear one item of apparel with a logo not larger than 1 inch by 3
inches.
Since we don't have any MIF logo wear I will be using a sharpie on
Caputo's t-shirt so the world will see www.makeitfo.com when he makes it
to the final table.
[Dave note: I did commit to wearing a Sandvine T-shirt if I made
it to
the final televised table]
Will try to send updates during breaks on Sunday (assuming we last
to
breaks).

Dave raised first hand no callers...
He has an average stack for his table. Edog is the chip leader at
the
table with about 18k
About 220 players left. Only 120 to go before he is in the money

is $9k.
Dave has about $12k. His table is about to be broken up let's see
where
he moves.....
... Good news is no "name" players at his new table. Bad
news is there
are some very big stacks.

His big slick beats a KQ on a king high board. [Dave note: a
foreshadowing of my final hand]
Dave started that hand with 9k in chips but now has 15k. Average
stack
is 13k
As an aside - they are filming the final table of the $1,500 NL
event in
the same room and it is an awesome spectacle. Allen Cunningham,
Scott
Fishman and Devilfish are the final three. Crowds in bleachers
watching
and screaming as if they are watching an NFL game. Who would have
thought 5 years ago that poker would be a spectator sport (and
remember
unlike when the event airs on TV, those watching here do not see
the
hole cards).

the chip leaders (probably because the luck of the draw has kept
him off
Caputos table so far).

jump
is when we get to 63 players.

Subject: Miscellaneous Rememberings of my WSOP adventure
Warning: Long...you might want to just press Delete now. (on
flight from
LV>Chicago)
- at the first break I really didn't feel I was playing well. 2
things I
believe changed my Karma...
1: I pledged 1% of any potential winnings to Cancer research dedicated
to my Nonno www.BadBeatonCancer.org
(wore the 1% Pin for luck) and
2: I had been wishing that I would just out last Tim and realized
that
that was a bad goal...I switched to hoping Tim would win and I
would get
10% of $400K
- I played on about 8 different tables and it was amazing on how some
tables were a lot of fun and others were just miserable...I'd
rather
lose a little bit on a fun table than win a bit on a miserable
table...I'd say 40-50% of players I saw appeared to be having no
fun
(sunglasses, iPod, not speaking a word and scowling at all times)
- sat beside an eye surgeon who gave me some tips about my eyes
including "learn Yoga"...said he played in another
tournament yesterday
and sat at the same table with one guy for the first 10 hours, he
just
saw him in the hall and asked him "how did you do?" And
the guy says
"who the hell are you?"
- before I knew who "E-Dog" was he had flopped at 4
Kings (pocket KK)
and won a fair bit on that hand...when he turned over his KK, I
ask him
jokingly if he was nervous on whether they would have held up? He
answered "hell yeah, I kept waiting for a 'mis-deal' to be called" Eric
was one of the nicest guys at any table. Later when a couple of
cameras
were on him for a 2nd time, I suggested that he trash talk us or
the
cameras will go away:
Eric: what do you want me to say to YOU?
Me: tell us how lucky we are to be playing at your table
Eric: that's Phil Helmuth's line
Everyone laughs...will be interesting to see if it makes ESPN.
- the guy who put me out, pro Robert Williams? my AK vs his KQ hit
a
queen on the flop...was same guy I sent away mumbling when I
luckily
beat his 88 earlier...he was obviously very good friends with
Annie Duke
as she was at our table every 15 minutes checking how he was
doing.
- got pocket Aces only once in 13 hours...they held up (last hand
before
break)
- got 4 of kind once (9's) to only 1 player who was all in
- immediately after we got down to 100 people and "in the
money" they
were breaking down the table next to me (re-distributing them to
other
tables) and the youngest kid I saw in the tourney stands up, picks
up
his chips and slips them into his pocket...someone points this out
to
the dealer and floor boss who was right there and the kid gets
"terminated" and disqualified (no $1500 for him!!!) -- 2
guys at the
table get very upset at this ruling and are really
complaining...tournament boss comes and watches for next 10
minutes
repeatedly saying "the rules are the rules" -- to be
fair we had been
reminded of this rule 10x in the last 10 hours.
- when collecting winnings, said I was Canadian to the Social
Security
number question and there was enough confusion that there was no
taxes
withheld.
I can't say I would have ever guessed that I would have lasted 13
hours
in a World Series of Poker tournament... But I think all of us who
play
a bit, overestimate the quality of play in the bottom 80% of the
field...I saw some really questionable play and many Kamikazes
playing
almost every hand with high volatility stack sizes.
If you are still reading Thanks for indulging me..and for all the
notes
of congrats.
